Foundations
- Leader Display of Self-Confidence as a Moderator (pp. 179)
- Leader display of self-confidence has been identified in a number of theoretical analyses of charismatic leadership as an important factor in leadership effectiveness, and as an antecedent of attributions of charisma (pp. 179)
- The effectiveness of leader self-sacrifice is contingent on another aspect of the leader’s behavior…their display of self-confidence
- By communicating the expectation of success, leader self-confidence may render the leader more attractive and charismatic, and motivate involvement in the job
- Not only does self-confidence render a leader more effective, but also enhances the relationship between leader self-sacrifice and follower identification
- If either the value (self-sacrifice) or expectancy (self-confidence) is low, motivation to follow a leader’s cause is dramatically undercut—If both components are high, motivation is substantially enhanced
